Mission Field: USA - Church Planting Project Sites

A flexible framework for Lutheran church planting

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod is working with its districts to spread to Gospel domestically through national missionaries. Just as the work of our international missionaries is specific to the place and context in which they serve, so also the districts of the LCMS best understand the needs of their mission field.

As part of the Mission Field: USA initiative, individual LCMS districts employ the national missionaries serving within their region. Under this model, donations can be made directly to the district in support of its missionaries.

Mission Field: USA–Gary

Through Mission Field: Gary (a part of the LCMS Mission Field: USA initiative), the Rev. Delwyn Campbell serves the LCMS Indiana District as a national missionary in Gary, Ind. Campbell works to foster the health and growth of the current Lutheran population in Gary through Word and Sacrament ministry at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and other area congregations, while also focusing on bringing the Gospel to the many unchurched members of the community. In addition proclaiming the Gospel through his ministry, he also brings Christ to the people of Gary by ministering to their needs. Campbell is also working to help establish a Lutheran school in Gary, that will serve the population of northwest Indiana.

Mission Field: USA–Baltimore

Through Mission Field: Baltimore (a part of the LCMS Mission Field: USA initiative), the Rev. Martin Schultheis serves the LCMS Southeastern District as a national missionary in the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood of Baltimore. In this neighborhood plagued by the worst poverty rates in Baltimore, as well as high incarceration rates, gang and drug activity, Schultheis brings the hope of Christ through relationship building and crisis care services, as well as a workforce development program which offers small business training and experience for men. Schultheis also brings the Gospel through his ministry at Emmanuel Lutheran Church and School, Catonsville, Md.

Through and with the congregation, McDermott is also involved in intentional outreach efforts to deaf community members throughout Dane County, Wis., and surrounding areas.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 12.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors (compared to a not-more-than ceiling of 10.5 percent the previous fiscal year). Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
